COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: JONATHAN FIELD

COASTAL FLUIDITY IN STUNNING WOODEN MASTERPIECES: Wood is often perceived as something rigid, not easy to bend or shape into something fluid and soft. Jonathan Field, however, takes this prime natural material and creates some of the most beautiful pieces of furniture that we have ever seen. [caption id="attachment_5757" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Courtesy: Jonathan Field[/caption] We came across Jonathan Field’s superb design and craftsmanship during our review of this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. The objects stood out, a melange of sophistication and quaintness that is never easy to achieve. There were two resin and oak tables that captured our attention, in particular. [caption id="attachment_5760" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Courtesy: Jonathan Field[/caption] Commissioned by a private client, the projects include LED lights which were hidden between the...

COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: ARTISTS’ JEWELLERY

COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: ARTISTS’ JEWELLERY

WHEN ARTISTS CREATE WEARABLE MASTERPIECES: Coco Chanel once said that “jewellery should not cause awe, but envy”. It is exactly this idea that stands behind the creation of artists’ jewellery, one-off/bespoke or limited-edition pieces created by some of the world’s greatest artists of both modern and contemporary times. [caption id="attachment_5725" align="aligncenter" width="410"] Lucio Fontana, Silver & Lacquer Bracelet, 1969 (Image Courtesy: Sotheby’s)[/caption] We had the pleasure of attending an Arts Club talk focused on this type of jewellery, with Louisa Guinness of Louisa Guinness Gallery, and the value and contribution that it brings to both the art and fashion world. COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: ARPER

SUPERB & STYLISH SEATING AL ITALIANO: Clerkenwell Design Week has come and gone, but the impression it left behind will last well into the next one. We’ve highlighted some of our favourite brands from CDW, but we’ve decided to save Arper for our #designpick. COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: TYPOGRAPHY BY PHILIPPE APELOIG

THE CELEBRATED DESIGNER CREATED STUNNING PLATE DESIGNS FOR LA MANUFACTURE DE SÈVRES: Philippe Apeloig once designed a scarf for Hermès in 2014, using the page layout of “Fragments d’un discours amoureux” (A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments” by Roland Barthes, arriving at a brilliant geometrical pattern. Thus, he is well acquainted with the abstraction and reimagination of references that are both esoteric and ordinary. [caption id="attachment_5614" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Courtesy: La Manufacture de Sèvres[/caption] If you are familiar with Apeloig’s dynamic posters and typography created over the span of several decades, you might be surprised to learn that his designs for La Manufacture de Sèvres don’t bear any lettering. Instead, he used the slashes and punctuation marks often present in his typefaces to produce three...

COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: VICUÑA BY LORO PIANA

EXPLORING THE WOOL MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD: The vicuña is one of the rare, smaller members of the camel family, indigenous to the Peruvian Andes. A long time ago, it was a sacred animal, revered by the Incas for its incredibly soft, sun-coloured fleece. Only Inca royalty were permitted to wear garments made from vicuña, with over three million of these doe-eyed animals grazing the rocky Andes at the time. But, as is always the case when the “civilised Westerners” come in, the Spanish conquistadors invaded the South American continent and discovered the beautiful vicuña with their precious fleece in the Andes. Instead of shearing them like reasonable men with an entrepreneurial spirit, the conquistadors took to guns and started hunting the...

COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: ARKET BY H&M

THE SWEDISH FAST-FASHION GIANT LAUNCHES A NEW BRAND: H&M has recently announced that they will be launching a new retail brand, called ARKET, a “modern-day market that will offer essential products for men, women, children and home”. Arket will be selling its own products along with a selection of non-H&M brands, and its price range will be higher than that of the group’s standard H&M figures. [caption id="attachment_5491" align="aligncenter" width="520"] Image Courtesy: Arket/H&M[/caption] Ulrika Bernhardtz, Arket’s Creative Director, told Business of Fashion in an interview that “it’s relevant to a modern customer to bring different brands together – under one roof, under one channel”. The brand’s ethos revolves around “timeless, crisp, quality and warmth”. Based on extensive market research, the creatives behind Arket identified a...

COSHAMIE’S DESIGN PICK: LOUIS VUITTON X SUPREME

THE OFFICIAL COLLABORATION THAT HAS RATTLED THE MEN’S FASHION WORLD: Rumours had been circulating the fashion world about a possible collaboration between iconic fashion brand Louis Vuitton and Supreme. The idea was first posted by creative director Kim Jones on Instagram – quickly deleted afterwards, later followed by leaked photos from fans who kept track of Supreme. [caption id="attachment_5414" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: Louis Vuitton[/caption] It turned out to be true – the collaboration was presented during its fall 2017 men’s runway show back in January, turning heads with its stylish blend between Vuitton’s unapologetically French approach and the New York-based urban fashion phenomenon. [caption id="attachment_5415" align="aligncenter" width="450"] Image Credit: Imaxtree[/caption] Kim Jones considers Supreme to be a “massive global phenomenon,” according to an interview...

ON·ENTROPY’S MARBLE LIGHTNESS AT SALONE DEL MOBILE

NOW AVAILABLE AT GALLERIA ROSSANA ORLANDI FOR PURCHASE: on•entropy is a marble atelier that was established in 2009 in Athens, Greece and London, UK, and has specialised in an unconventional approach to the archetypal Greek material. The studio’s designs focus on the visual and tactile contradiction between being heavy and compact and, at the same time, vulnerable, fragile and even translucent. [caption id="attachment_5388" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: on•entropy[/caption] This is, in fact, the brand ethos of on•entropy – experimenting with marble and its entropy, its diverse character, its transformation potential and inherent limitations. The result is always a physical manifestation of flawless craftsmanship through exquisitely intricate and delicate creations that blend marble traditions with contemporary designs. [caption id="attachment_5387" align="aligncenter" width="500"] Image Credit: on•entropy[/caption] Following this...
