COASTAL FLUIDITY IN STUNNING WOODEN MASTERPIECES:
Wood is often perceived as something rigid, not easy to bend or shape into something fluid and soft. Jonathan Field, however, takes this prime natural material and creates some of the most beautiful pieces of furniture that we have ever seen.
We came across Jonathan Field’s superb design and craftsmanship during our review of this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. The objects stood out, a melange of sophistication and quaintness that is never easy to achieve. There were two resin and oak tables that captured our attention, in particular.
Commissioned by a private client, the projects include LED lights which were hidden between the two table spines, giving their new owner the ability to change colours.
Each piece of furniture signed by Jonathan Field is completely bespoke, splendidly handmade and given a consecutive making number, along with the JF initials on the underside and a certificate of sale from his gallery, Connaught Brown of London.
Connaught Brown also took three of Mr Field’s works to the Salon of Art + Design in New York in autumn 2016, as well as the Maastricht art fair, the Spring TEFAF in New York and the summer show at the gallery’s Albemarle Street space in W1.
Mr Field was thoroughly influenced by a childhood spent in East Yorkshire’s coastal area, known for its sparse horizontal lines of dykes and wind-blasted trees in a flat open and textured landscape, adorned with massive blue skies. The views nurtured his love of drawing and painting, bringing forth his appreciation of the subtlest of forms.
After a fruitful career as an artist and illustrator, Mr Field expanded on his passion for three-dimensional forms, particularly furniture, which eventually drew him to interior design. Nevertheless, Mr Field continued to pursue simplicity in form and colour, and it can be easily seen in any of his designs.
The furniture-maker says he aims to translate the wood’s natural beauty when he designs and makes a new piece. He follows the silent presence and tactile quality of the wood, as he only selects the perfect pieces of timber – his furniture must both please the eye and the hand once it’s complete.
Considering the fact that no two pieces are the same, we’d have a hard time pointing out a specific design pick. Instead, we’ll go with all of them! Have a look at his website and find out for yourself as to what makes Jonathan Field’s designs so simply extraordinary.
