THE LOVE STORY BEHIND RICK OWENS & MICHÉLE LAMY’S ICONIC CREATIONS:
On the occasion of Rizzoli’s “Rick Owens: Furniture”, a new book that celebrates Rick Owens and Michéle Lamy’s furniture designs, we figured it would be a good time to look at the remarkable pieces created under the renowned designer’s name.
The book itself doesn’t just catalogue Rick Owens’ superb furniture, but it also works as a love letter from the designer to his wife and partner, Michéle Lamy. Ms Lamy has recently presented a series of pieces celebrating the book launch at Dover Street Market, along with her new jewellery collection, Hunrod – featuring golden nuggets imprinted with her own bite marks.
When the couple first started making furniture, it served a specific purpose – their marital bed was their very first creation, long before they’d even envisioned themselves producing design art for global art galleries.
Ms Lamy herself has impressive experience in creating a physical space to inspire sociocultural dynamism, well documented by her mid-90s venture to transform a Los Angeles car park into a bacchanalian restaurant that hosted Hollywood’s most prominent creative figures, a venue named Les Deux Cafés.
Her ability to curate spaces and people in her signature hospitality style has worked seamlessly with Rick Owens’ design philosophy, somehow. Whether it’s moose antler chairs or white marble benches, Lamy and Owens’ creations require physical interaction. You have to be there to feel it.
Beautifully completing each other, Lamy’s warm and artistic chaos is a perfect match to Owens’ rigid design lines, and ultimately drive an extraordinary dynamic that has generated some of their most memorable pieces of furniture.
“What are the odds that we would be together for 27 years when we were coming from such different worlds?” Ms Lamy said in an interview with AnOther Magazine last month. “But we started dancing… et voilà!”
That being said, finding the quintessential design piece that embraces function while celebrating the very core of the artist’s nature can be quite the mission. Nevertheless, adding a Rick Owens to one’s design collection will certainly complete the quest and, at the same time, leave its owner with a superb and timeless object in their personal living space.
